Firn Trail has no accounts, no ads and no analytics. Your location, your routes and your hikes stay on your phone: we don't collect them, sell them or show them to anyone.
Who we are
Firn Trail is an Android app that shows trail maps of the Alps and sends the route to a Garmin watch. It is developed by, and the responsibility of, Zirma Solutions (Italy). For any question: [email protected].
What stays on your phone
This data is used only by the app, on your phone, and never reaches us:
- Your location, to show you on the map, follow the route and record the hike.
- The routes you plan and the hikes you complete: tracks, times, distances, ascent and descent.
- Your heart rate measured by the watch during a hike, saved with the hike.
- Recent searches, favourite destinations and settings.
What goes over the internet, and to whom
- Our map server (mappe.firntrail.app, hosted by Cloudflare). The app downloads from it the map areas you choose and the list of places used for search. If you look at an area you haven't downloaded, the app asks the server only for the map pieces of that area. Like any server, it sees the phone's IP address and which files are requested. We keep no logs of these requests and don't link them to anyone. Cloudflare processes them on our behalf: Cloudflare privacy policy.
- Weather, from Open-Meteo. For forecasts the app sends the coordinates and altitude of a few points of the route (for example start, finish and highest point), with nothing that identifies you. Open-Meteo also sees the IP address: Open-Meteo terms.
- Weather and avalanche bulletin websites (regional and national weather services). They open only if you tap them, as web pages inside the app, and those websites' own rules apply.
- Your Garmin watch. The route and the data of the hike in progress go from the phone to the watch through the Garmin Connect app, and the heart rate comes back from the watch to the phone. Whatever the watch records and syncs with your Garmin account is covered by Garmin's privacy policy.
- Only if you ask: if you send your location to someone ("Send position", on the Emergency page), you send it with the app you choose; if you download your data ("Download your data", in the Profile), the app creates a file in the phone's Download folder.
Permissions
- Location: for the map, navigation and recording hikes. During a hike the app keeps using your location even with the screen off or the phone in your pocket, with an always-visible notification that says it is running and lets you stop it.
- Notifications: for the off-trail warning, arrival, watch status and downloads.
- Internet: for maps, the list of places and weather, as described above.
What we don't do
- We don't ask you to create an account and we don't know who you are.
- We show no ads and use no analytics or tracking services.
- We don't sell or share data with anyone.
Android backup
If Android backup is turned on on your phone, the system may save the app's settings to your Google account, under Google's rules. You decide this in your phone's settings.
Deleting your data
Uninstalling Firn Trail deletes all of its data from the phone: maps, routes, hikes and settings. Files you exported stay where you saved them. We hold no data of yours to delete.
Children
The app collects no personal data from anyone, children included.
Your rights
Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) you have the right to know which personal data are processed, to ask for them to be corrected or deleted, and to object to processing. Since we keep no data of yours, there is nothing for us to hand over or delete; for any question write to [email protected]. You can also contact the Italian data protection authority, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali.
Changes
If the app changes the way it uses data, we will update this page and the date at the top.
